Background of the study
Digital linguistic innovation has accelerated with the rise of social media, transforming how language evolves in real time. In Nigeria, Instagram and TikTok stand out as platforms where users actively engage in creative language practices. On Instagram, captions and comments often feature inventive wordplay, neologisms, and syntactic experimentation, while TikTok videos promote rapid, ephemeral expressions that frequently incorporate trending phrases and innovative slang (Ibrahim, 2023). These platforms, with their unique visual and auditory affordances, stimulate distinct forms of linguistic creativity that challenge conventional language norms. This study assesses online linguistic innovation by comparing language use on Instagram and TikTok. It explores the mechanisms behind word formation, syntactic adaptation, and lexical creativity, examining how cultural influences and digital trends contribute to continuous language change (Okafor, 2024). The research aims to document emerging linguistic patterns and evaluate their impact on traditional language structures, offering insights into the dynamic interplay between digital media and linguistic evolution (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
While online linguistic innovation is evident on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, there is limited research comparing these innovations in the Nigerian context. Existing studies often focus on one platform or lack a comparative perspective, resulting in an incomplete understanding of how different digital environments drive language change (Chukwu, 2023). This gap hinders the development of comprehensive models for digital language evolution and impedes effective strategies for language education and policy formulation (Ibrahim, 2023).

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of online linguistic innovation in Nigerian social media. The insights will advance digital linguistics and inform educators, policymakers, and media practitioners about emerging language trends in the digital era (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to analyzing language use on Instagram and TikTok among Nigerian users; it excludes other platforms and offline language practices.
